When you’ve bought an expensive power tool, you want it to last a long time, so taking some time to regularly maintain it will save you money in the long run.
Here are some regular checks and maintenance jobs you should be doing to keep your power tool in tip top condition.
Cleaning
After each use of your power tool you should be cleaning it thoroughly.
Wait for it to cool down, then wipe down the outside using a damp cloth.
The inside can be cleaned using compressed air to remove any dirt or grit. This is far more effective than a brush, which will often just move the dirt around.
Storing Carefully
You want to make sure you store your tools carefully after each use.
A hard case is the recommended method, and ensure they don’t get overly damp or extremely hot/cold. Damp environments lead to all sorts of issues with electrical components, and can cause corrosion too.
Sharpening Blades
Using the manufacturers recommended steps, regularly sharpening your blades will help keep the tool running efficiently, and put less strain on other parts too. The more you use the tool, the more regularly you’ll have to sharpen them.
Replacing Worn Parts – Carbon Brushes
There are some little parts inside your power tools that will wear over time, no matter how well you look after them.
But don’t fear! Even if they are worn out, you don’t always need to invest in a brand new tool.
The most common part to wear out is the carbon brushes, which conduct electricity through the motor.
A classic sign of a worn out carbon brush is seeing sparks inside the motor housing of your tool.

Proper Battery Usage
Batteries are fairly sensitive, and so proper battery care can make a real difference to the longevity of your tools.
You want to ensure batteries are fully charged, and fully used up. Try to avoid leaving your batteries uncharged or unused for long periods of time. If your tool has a lithium ion battery, then sure you store is in a climate controlled area, as it does not react well to any extremes of temperature.
Lubricate Moving Parts
Using the manufacturers recommended oil, lubricating moving parts of your tool will reduce friction (so reducing wear on the motors and parts) and will also help with preventing rust from forming.
