DeWalt tools carry two numbers that matter when you're ordering spare parts: a model number and a Type number. Most people know the model, but the Type number is the one that catches them out, because many DeWalt tools share the same model name but use different internal parts depending on the Type number.
A replacement part has to match both. Carbon brushes are the most common example: one model of DeWalt tool can carry more than one brush listing, split by Type, and a brush that fits one Type may not fit another of the same model.
What a DeWalt Type Number Is
A DeWalt Type number is a revision marker that identifies which production version of one specific model you have. Your model number names the tool. The Type number, printed alongside it, names the version of that tool.
DeWalt can manufacture different internal versions of the same model over its production life, and each version gets its own Type number: Type 1, Type 2, Type 10 and so on. That's why the second number exists. The numbers don't always run in sequence, so don't read anything into gaps between them.
The Type number is not a year code or a date of manufacture, and it isn't the number stamped on the carbon brush itself. That number identifies the brush, not the tool. If you're trying to decode the markings on a brush, our guide to what the numbers on carbon brushes mean covers that.
The only reliable way to find yours is to read it off the tool itself.
Where to Find the Type Number on Your DeWalt Tool
The model number and Type number are normally printed on the rating plate on the side or lower section of the machine. It's a metal or printed label fixed to the tool body, and both numbers appear together on it.
The label states them plainly: you'll see the model and Type printed together, something like "Model DCG412" and "Type 10". Read both numbers at the same time and write them down before you start looking for parts.
Use the full model and Type when searching. Copy any additional identification numbers from the label too.
The same model can carry different Types depending on when it was produced, so always check your own tool's rating plate rather than going by someone else's or a listing you found online.
If the rating plate or the tool itself carries a brushless marking or a BL badge, the motor has no carbon brushes to replace, and the fault will lie elsewhere.
If the rating plate is worn, painted over or missing, send us a photo of the label and we'll help confirm what you have.
Why the Type Number Changes Which Part Fits
A later Type is a revised version of the same tool, and revised versions can carry different internal parts. Carbon brushes, brush holders, switches and other components can all change between Types, and DeWalt advises that service parts can differ between type numbers, even when the main model number is the same. Matching the model alone isn't enough when a tool spans more than one Type.
This applies across the wider DeWalt spare parts range, not only to carbon brushes. Any component that fits inside the motor or connects to it could be revision-specific.
Always check the listing, because a later Type does not always need a different part. Sometimes one part listing covers several Types at once. Our replacement carbon brushes for DeWalt part 1002805-00, for instance, fit a DW745 Type 1, Type 3 and Type 4, and a DWE7491 Type 1 and Type 2. The listing will tell you which Types it covers, so confirm yours is included before ordering.
On a corded tool, check the voltage too. DeWalt corded tools are sold in the UK in 230V and 110V site versions, and some brush listings are for one voltage only. The 1002805-00 set above, for example, is listed for 230V table saws, while other listings state that they suit both 110V and 230V. Read the voltage off the same rating plate and make sure the listing covers it.
If you order by model number alone and the part crosses a Type boundary, it won't fit. That means a return, a second order and more downtime for your tool.
DCG412 Angle Grinder: Type 1 Takes Different Brushes to Types 2, 10 and 11
The DeWalt DCG412 18V angle grinder is one model listed under two separate carbon brush listings, split by Type number.
The DCG412 Type 1 uses a grooved pair of brushes made for the 610126-00 brass brush holder: our replacement carbon brushes for the DeWalt DCG412 Type 1. Types 2, 10 and 11 use a different brush holder, N412223, and take our replacement set of four carbon brushes for the DCG412 Type 2, 10 and 11. Both sets are replacement carbon brushes to fit the DCG412, but they're not interchangeable: the Type determines which set goes in your grinder. Each aftermarket set is brushes only, and needs to be soldered or hard-wired to the original brush holder.
We also stock Genuine DeWalt parts for this grinder, again split by Type: Genuine DeWalt carbon brushes for the DCG412 Type 1, and the Genuine DeWalt N412223 brush holder with brushes for the DCG412 Type 2, 10 and 11. If you'd rather not solder new brushes onto the old holder, the Genuine listing supplies the holder and brushes together.
It's the same model throughout. The only thing that changes the part is the Type number on your tool's rating plate.
How to Use Your Model and Type Number to Buy the Right Part
- Read both the model number and the Type number off your tool's rating plate, and keep them to hand before you start searching. On a corded tool, note the voltage as well. The complete model details matter.
- When you find a listing, confirm it names your exact Type before you buy. We've matched all of our brushes against the specific tool models that they work with, so you can find one that's proven to work in yours. If a listing covers the DCG412 Type 1 and your grinder is a Type 10, that listing isn't for your tool.
- Check your old brushes against the listing too. Take the old brushes out and compare the dimensions and shape to the listing photos before ordering. Height and thickness stay the same as a brush wears, but length doesn't, so a worn brush will measure shorter than the new part. Even similar models may use different brush sizes, and the voltage alone does not confirm compatibility.

What to Do If the Type Number Is Worn or Missing
If the rating plate on your tool is no longer legible or the plate is missing entirely, you can still identify the right part by working from the old carbon brushes themselves.
- Unplug the tool or remove the battery first, then take the old brushes out.
- Measure them carefully: length, height and thickness in millimetres, using a digital calliper where possible. A worn brush's remaining length is not its original new length, so measure what is left and note that the brush is worn rather than guessing how long it used to be.
- Match the height and thickness to the listing, compare the overall shape to the listing photos, and expect the new brush to be longer than your worn one.
We'd always recommend measuring your old brushes accurately before buying, because incorrect brushes can damage the commutator (the copper segments on the armature).
While the old brushes are out, check whether one has a small pin protruding from the carbon block. Some brushes have an auto cut-off feature: that pin pops out once the brush wears to its limit, safely stopping the motor before the commutator is damaged. If your brushes have one and the pin is out, the brushes have reached their wear limit and a new pair is needed.
If you're still not sure, photograph the old brushes and the brush plate, and send them to us along with whatever model details you can read. You don't need to know the original part number to make an enquiry. Accurate measurements, clear photographs and your machine's details give us a useful starting point for checking our range.
Match the physical part first, then order the confirmed match. Don't guess by model number alone when the Type isn't available to you.
Aftermarket and Genuine Brushes
At Top Deals Online, our aftermarket replacement carbon brushes are described as "to fit" or "for" your model: these are compatible replacement parts that we source and manufacture to our own specification through trusted global partners. Each brush goes through:
- formulation
- cutting to exact brush-holder dimensions
- grinding for smooth contact surfaces
- dimensional measurement
- wire embedding and terminal welding
The carbon block is a combination of materials designed to a resistance that matches the voltage and wattage of the tool it goes into, using carbon-graphite, copper graphite, silver graphite, natural graphite or electro graphite depending on the application, held to a tolerance of -0.1mm to 0mm for correct fit.
Genuine listings carry the manufacturer's own part, marked clearly as Genuine. We stock both for many common DeWalt tools. A correctly specified aftermarket brush is the right part whatever the tool cost, not a budget-only option.
A pair of our aftermarket brushes costs between £4.65 and £18.99, so there's no reason to throw away a tool worth many times that when all it needs is a new set of brushes.
Our specification draws on over 15 years in the spare parts and carbon brush industry. Top Deals Online has been selling on eBay since 2012, and our eBay shop has passed 268,000 items sold, and 96% of our reviews are five-star.
FAQs
Is there a DeWalt Type number list or chart?
There's no single public master chart that maps every DeWalt model to all its Type numbers. The Type is specific to each model and revision, and no combined lookup table covers them all.
The practical route is to read the Type off your tool's own rating plate, then match the part by model and Type together. If the plate is illegible, contact us with your machine details and photos and we'll help narrow it down.
Do DeWalt Type numbers tell you the year the tool was made?
No, a DeWalt Type number doesn't tell you the year a tool was made. It marks a production revision, not a manufacture date. It doesn't map to a specific year or country of manufacture.
Use the Type to find the right spare part. Trying to work backwards from a date or a serial number won't reliably tell you which Type you have.
Where can I buy carbon brushes for my DeWalt tool's Type?
Top Deals Online sells replacement carbon brushes for DeWalt tools, plus Genuine DeWalt brushes and holders for some models, and our listings name the DeWalt models and Types each set fits. Search our DeWalt carbon brushes range by your model number, then check your Type is on the listing before you order.
